Hey everyone I had a chicken disappear 2 days ago I only have 4 now so I was paranoid with small flock. For past two weeks I’ve seen hawks swooping so I’ve had my Great Pyrenees on decks and I’ve been keeping guard. Here i am watching skies and yesterday in PA here on a rural mountain 3:30 pm midday while in my hammock 15 ft away I hear my 3 pekin ducks screaming and see a coyote in the water with them?!?!? It gets out and just stares at me while I yelled no fear! I hear them at night in the woods we are butted up to thousand acre woods but never thought they’d be a threat during day with my GP especially. We are allowed to kill coyotes in this case so I got shot gun and thought I shot him but no signs searching later. anyone have ideas - this coyote clearly killed a chicken and wasn’t afraid to come back for more ? I have a 8 wk pekin duck that doesn’t shut up so maybe the reason it was lured in because in 7 years I’ve never seen a coyote. the two older Pekins are quiet. I was thinking putting my 8 wk old in a secure dog cage next to pond with couple decoys in the pond and set the shot up around same time today. I think this coyote will be back if not his friends would I assume. Any advice would be great ! Thanks

Boy that had to be scary! We have coyotes here and hear them every night. Only once a few years ago did one come close and it took off. The DNR said most likely there were more, and since it was by our flashlight we saw him, there were probably the rest of its family nearby. They can travel alone, but usually hang with their families.

It has been years since we've seen any here, but again, can hear them most every night off in the distance. I think the fact that we scared it or them off the first time, plus, we have two dogs, that they wouldn't come near again unless they were starving.

I would think now that you've scared that one, plus, if it saw/heard your dog, that would be enough to make it go elsewhere and not come back. You mentioned the 8-week duck that doesn't shut up and you're right, is probably enticing them. Does the duckling need a buddy to keep it quiet perhaps?

Yes I was terrified with no weapon trying to defend my pets and hit wasn’t afraid of me I worried it had rabies for an instant. Good to know you’ve scared away. Oh yeah I hatched this duckling because I have a pair and the one is on her death bed always flipping over and just struggling so I hatched so my male would leave the old lady alone and I luckily hatched a female so he can mate with her and not bother my old lady. So I have 3 ducks and she even hangs with the goats grazing or chickens when I give snacks. I think she’s spoiled because I had her indoors with me in diapers for first 5 weeks until she could go outside with the rest.
