Coyotes Beware!

I havent heard of anyone keeping Irish Wolfhounds, though maybe they would do okay. A friend of ours has Anatolians they say do a good job.

We've had a pack of coyotes here for several years with no incidents on our property. They have taken several local outdoor and feral cats. We have 4 large Dogs that patrol our fenceline regularly. They have a certain bark that must mean "coyote" and when 1 signals the dogs gather as a pack to defend their property. The coyotes so far have respected our fence line, they leave their scat on the outside perimeter and the dogs leave theirs on the inside. Our dogs have not been trained to perform this behavior they came up with this on their own. We have 2 male doberman, 1 female boxer and 1 female pit mix. Our pack does a very good job at protecting our other animals from predators. However on the down side the Boxer and Pit mix are proven chicken eaters!

Yeah, same with me. I have a herd of dobermans, and I don't expect to ever have much trouble with coyotes. BUT the dobes are the main threat to my birds!

I'd love to hear about wolfhounds and coyotes. After all, the wolfhounds were created to hunt wolves. They oughtta be able to handle the yotes!

Borzoi - Russian Wolfhounds- are used to hunt coyotes in Texas. We've had 2 over the years & they were both wonderful dogs. We never had a coyote problem, but I can tell you, one time I had Tasha out--we used to let her run down next to the bayou--and she suddenly stopped & froze, staring across the fields. There was a stray dog in the center. Borzoi are sighthounds; they have good eyesight. She took off straight for it, me screaming way behind her.
When she got close it turned & started running & she kicked into high gear.
She ran up alongside it, opened those huge, long jaws, clamped it across the neck & flipped it, then began circling it.
That's what they are bred to do. Hold the prey until the hunters & big mastiffs get there. They don't kill, they pursue and hold.
We used to play with her, running & dodging around, she would throw her front legs out wide & body block you across the knees to keep you from running past her.
Both of ours would play like that.

I thought about them too. Beautiful dogs! But somehow they seem so refined and overbred, to me. I'm sure I'm just not giving them enough credit! Is it common to use them on coyotes down there?
