We have coyotes. I know that we do, I have never seen one on our property but I have seen a few hit along the roadsides and I hear them at night in the distance. I have always worried about them coming into the yard, but like I said I have never seen one that close. I went out tonight to put the girls to bed, their coop and run are not currently connected and I have to physically move them into the coop for the night and close everything up. I was about half way to the coop when I heard the most awful noise... a long howl CLOSE. I mean VERY CLOSE! Then it sounded like the world erupted. There were howls, snarls, yips, screams etc. coming from everywhere. The noise was terrible. They were apparantly right on the other side of the trees from where I was, probably not more than 20 feet from me. It sounded like there was a fight going on, but I didn't stick around to find out. I practically flew back to the house and woke hubby up (he was asleep on the couch) so he could bring the gun and watch while I put the girls in the coop. OMG... my heart was beating so hard I could barely even tell him what was going on when I got him awake.

Geez... I don't know how in the world I will ever get to sleep tonight.

I was just really glad I didn't bring the dogs out with me. Our German Shepherd would have barrelled into the middle of it for sure and the new little guy that we have doesn't know that he is only knee high. He has "short guy syndrome" and he thinks he could take a great dane down! That would have been a disaster for sure! There is a gun in the coop, but I think I will be taking one with me from now on as I walk out.

same here we have dropped one and whenever they are near we grab our grab our guns and hunt them down

I live on 5 acres that is backed up by State land that is a wetland project. About 45 acres in size. I am surrounded by coyotes. Just came back in from the barn, a ewe just lambed and the coyotes started their howling. They are not far away. I don't know... they have run through my yard heading home in the early morning hours for their den up the street. We are on a private road and all the neighbors are on 5 acres and have mostly horses or chickens. I know I am very lucky but my hens free range daily, put them selves to bed at night and all stays well.

All I can really attribute this too is the feral animals that are living off of other animals must not be in need of a more challenging food source, ie my house and barn area. My small dogs would not be any sort of deterrent to a coyote. I know they look through the bushes and snicker. I have never minded them and actually enjoy their singing when the packs get to going. My neighbor to the South (across the pasture) actually stepped outside one night yelled at them to shut up and they did. His place is more wooded so the pack on that side is very close and loud at his place. As a friend of my son always says.. their just trying to make a living too...

Laurie, I hate to be a realist, but if they are that close It's only a matter of time until they strike. Be especially protective of your small dogs. They readily feed upon dogs and become very aggressive when denning and raising pups.

I live in CT and never never heard anything howl my entire life. I now here them as well. My take on it is that someone is letting them go. I mean in order for them to come down from Canada they all have to cross the Mass. Turnpike, then cross I-84 in CT and then cross I-95 in Ct to get to my Uncle's place - yes he lives in Stratford by the shore and he said he can hear them at night as well. What are they chances that a pack will make it across 3 highways that have fencing running on both sides of them? I thought I read somewhere that the wildlife Co was bringing them in to get the over populated Canadian geese? Hmm would've been easier to just shoot the goose and have dinner LOL

I highly doubt anyone is letting them go. They are very adaptable animals. We have them spotted in downtown Detroit every year. I also recall a story on the news a few years ago where one was in downtown Chicago and it walked into a deli and laid down in the ope drink cooler. They can get along most any place.
