Coyotes

Our hens were attacked by a coyote yesterday. Thankfully none were taken. Two had missing feathers. One of the two has been in her nesting box since it happened and is making consistent clucking sounds and her feathers had been stripped right down her chest. there are no visible injuries. I was hoping for some advice on helping her get better. I know she may be traumatized but I dont want her to die from not eating or drinking. Please help my lady friend.

Oh no, poor babies. Coyotes are so mean, your girls are lucky to be okay. When my cockerel was attacked by a weasel I separated him right away. He was also very traumatized and stressed. I would put her in her own little place, maybe in the garage or if you want her in the house, in your basement, so you can keep a close eye on her. She may be going into shock, and needs to be moved to somewhere that's very quiet and stress free. She may not eat or drink right away but get some dishes for food and water to but with her. She's probably really scared by the whole incident, and just needs to be removed from it. Just keep a close eye on her, check on her often and make sure she's breathing okay and everything else seems normal. Once she calms down, it could take a bit, she should start eating and drinking again.

I recently had a chicken killed by a coyote I was so sad. Once a coyote finds easy food they come back. So here are some ways to keep them away. Put lights around the coop. You can buy this at a store it is expensive but it works, Panther pee. Weird huh? I have been looking for it all the stores are out. Coyotes are really bad this year.

She is recovering wonderfully! So happy. Unfortunately there are also foxes seen at our neighbors house just yesterday! She lost 3 birds because they were out of their coop. Mine were inside. We have a friend who "helped" make sure the fox would never kill anymore chickens. I have plans to enlarge the coop and cut back a bit on how much time they spend out foraging.
