I have a game hen that all of a sudden today started picking on the younger girls. I saw her attack one of my EEs and cut her over the eye. I brought the EE in the house and let her relax and sleep off the stress. When she was feeling better, I brought her back outside and the game hen was going after another EE. I told her that if I came out again and she was attacking another chicken, then she would have to go in timeout. I will cage her up alone if need be. She might even give me eggs again. Do you think they are re-establishing the pecking order? Any advice is appreciated. Thanx

History
They have been cooped up since I have had them. Older chickens in one pen and younger chickens in another. 3 weeks to a month ago, I started letting everyone free range. Everybody got along fine except for the minor scuffle here and there. And that is usually only to chase the others away from food etc. Well, we have been getting alot of rain over the past week, and none of my chickens seem to know how to get in out of the rain. I do believe a couple of them got a cold. So I decided to keep them in the run/coop. Not only that, but I am also trying to get eggs from the game hen who had a nest under the old car out back and now has stopped laying again. She stopped laying in the first place because she hatched an egg and also adopted 2 other chicks that are the same age as hers. Now the chicks are about 7 weeks old and I found the nest last week with 6 eggs.

Does anyone have any advice?

Saw this morning that she must've attacked the first EE again, because she was missing more feathers on her head and was bleeding again.

I'm sorry I don't have much advice. I'm having somewhat of the same issue. First of all, they don't respond to verbal threats of time outs. LOL! I've tried! LOL! And my hen just looks at me like she'd love to pen my eyes out. Little brat! However, your issue maybe be that she feels threatened by the EE's. Especially if she's got babies or if she thinks they are big enough to threaten her ranking. I'm not sure though.

thanx. i thought it might be a pecking order issue, but i dont know for sure. the younger hens are getting to be 20 weeks. maybe she knows they are getting to laying age and feels threatened by them.

Could very well be. I'm having the food possession issue with my hens vs. my 13 week olds. I'm thinking it's the heat. *shruggs* who know though. Good luck.
