Cracked eggs - wax or nail polish?

I had one waaaayyy worse than that I repaired with nail polish (clear) I was on day 16 when it was damaged. I think I like polish because heat and humidity cant hurt the dry polish- it wont melt off, rub off, or dry and flake off. It also gives better control during application and its pretty thin, but does a good sealing job. Those are just my opinions though.... I also have a feeling the polish does not have a porous composition and therefore is less likely to let in bacteria that could damage or kill the developing chick. My egg hatched and she is laying for us! Good luck with whichever way you go! If you do a search, I posted pics of my egg, under- Cracked eggs can make it. I think its in the hatching eggs section. Whatever you do, make sure you dont put too much of anything, espeacially where the chick will pip through, you dont wanna make its job any tougher!

i had some Porcelain D'Uccle eggs in with a broody, and somebody kept pecking the large ends open. i managed to find one that was recently pecked open and put tape over it. Not regular scotch tape, but clear package tape, the thicker kind, heavy duty but clear. i was able to cut it to fit over that end and cover it completely. The chick hatched and is doing fine now.

i would be concerned about nail polish, as the ingredients are toxic. But if others have had success with that, it might be an option, also. Might as well try. If you notice oozing or a foul smell down the line, you will know the egg has gotten bacteria in it and you will want to discard it.

Hi! If I find a crack like that I use small pieces of masking tape to mend the egg.
I find peck marks once in a while when I candle prior to wrapping eggs for shipping and just cover it with a small piece of masking tape.
If the membrane was not damaged, they always grow just fine.
I've opened a few late, but live eggs and recovered the opening with clear tape so I could 'watch' --- those hatched too.
Good luck!

Seems like it can't hurt to try! I would use wax or emlers glue instead of nail polish. I have never actually done it but nail polish just seems so toxic, I would worry about compromising the other eggs in the hatch if it were to adversly affect the process. Wish I would have heard about covering cracks, I tossed one two weeks ago that my broody was on. It was developing but I didn't think it would make it with a crack!

I have no experience whatsoever at hatching eggs, I just wanted to say beautiful freaking eggs!!

They are pretty as a picture.

If I had to do the mending to the egg, I would use wax, less harmful IMHO.

Everybody has differnt cool tricks...I used elmers glue on it then while glue is wet add a piece of tissue, then more glue on it till the tissue was wet and see thru from the glue. And it developed good last I candeled it it was great its in lockdown right now. Good Luck Hatching!!

I haven’t read the rest of the posts but I would DEFINITELY NOT use nail polish. That stuff must be soooooo toxic. I don't even put it on my nails, even the smell makes me dizzy so I absolutely would not put it on a live developing embryo.
