You may also be able to lay a piece of plywood on the bottom if you add a 2x4 on the front. Then maybe you wouldn't need the mat.

Add more nest bedding. They like to scratch a hole to lay in and then pull more bedding in around them as they sit there. I probably have 6 inches or more when I first put bedding in. It soon gets mashed down to about 3 or so inches deep at the thinnest point.
