Craigslist OK to find laying hens? Your experiences/opinions please!

how funny. just tonight i made a deal on there for some free roosters for my freezer camp for wayward roos. yeah!

i did get a drier off there once that was broken, but then i got another that worked perfectly. so, just go with what seems right.

there is even a possibility of some other animals, too, so we'll just see what happens. regardless, i know i'll be busy on labor day. yum.

Most of our hens we have gotten from Craigslist. Fortunately all of the people we got ours from had healthy hens and coops/runs. Also bought a real nice dishwasher for 75.00 as well. No bad experiences for us yet.

Chicabee....

You use the same craigslist as I do! LOL I know it wasn't me that didn't respond to your e-mails. LOL I don't have any ads up right now. Too funny....like I said in last post I have found mainly good on there.

And oh yeah....I bought my washer and dryer for $100 bucks for the set....still using them over a year later.

Like others have said- QUARANTINE! Three weeks is good. Very, very important as chickens hide many communicable diseases extremely well. No matter how clean the premisses looked or how healthy the birds appear, diseases can go dormant in a chicken. But the move to your place will cause enough stress to bring forth symptoms in at least some of the birds if they have something.

Watch for coughing, sneezing, runny eyes, fluffed birds standing around looking unhappy. Immediately cull sypmtomatic birds and send one to the state vet for necropsy to determine possible cause- this is a public service. All you have to do is get your bird there. Call the Maine Cooperative Extension at the University of Maine in Orono for instructions on what to do.

Just remember that most of the people on craigslist are just people who have something to sell. Some just want to sell something they don't need and some are trying to scam you.

I recently saw some "rare Farting Goats" for sale." I really think he should have come up with a better gimmick. Just a reminder that the buyer should beware.

Last year I ordered too many chicks and sold some craigslist. They were healthy chicks and I just did not need that many. I found a nice person who was starting a homestead and wanted chickens. It worked out well.

Thanks everyone... I still haven't heard back, but I think some of the ads have been up for a while. Maybe the chickens are gone by now.

I did see some new postings... problem is driving far to get them!

I'll keep trying!

Crazy, I know! It was a fun adventure, though- and the start of a great hobby!
Of course gas wasn't near $4/gal then, now that I think about it.

Like others have said- QUARANTINE!

Yes, I will quarantine at my house where no chickens live, then she will go live with my friend's single hen until we can get our coop/run built.

I went yesterday and picked up 4 cute lil bunnies. 3 does 1 buck. The guy was great! Very clean and protected set up! Great deal too!

We've done a lot of buying/selling on Craigslist, but as with anything you have to beware the scammers.
If you buy chickens from CL, be sure to quarantine them. It won't save you from everything, but it's good practice. My flock is now closed, but the last 4 layers I bought off of CL. I quarantined them for several weeks, and make sure to dust them well before doing anything. First thing I checked for was lice... yup. There they were. But after dusting them, and worming them, I put them in with the rest of the flock and we've had no problems.

I have PLENTY of birds now... I will only be selling on CL now...
