I had a broody mum, a wynadotte, she sat on fertilized eggs
and for whatever reason they didnt hatch, so..i got her two babies, day old, they are silkie cross something. And also got a silkie chick 4 weeks, and a polish 5 weeks,
they all free range, i did have mum and bubs seperate, but she wanted out, so she is, they sleep seperate.
Now, she is fine with the other grown up chickens coming near her babies, but not they 4 and 5 weeks she chases them and pecks them? why is this.?
thanks

I've observed that broody hens are very tolerant of the other fully mature adult chickens coming near her chicks but not immature birds or birds she doesn't like/trust. It's quite normal.

I think this is normal as well. I've never really understood why this is though.
All the mums I've known chased away other elder chicks and chicks of a similar age belonging to other mums. Given that you free range this shouldn't pose much of a problem and the elder chicks will learn to keep away from broody mum.
