"Cravings"

"lazy gardener", just curious where in Maine do you live. Years ago we spent our summers in Sullivan, ME.

As far as I know, there is no dietary need for bologna. However, in the name of science, I suggest that you put out a platter of bite sized bologna bits, and a platter of high quality bite sized steak bits. You could then observe to see if the chickens NEED steak more than they NEED bologna.
I didn't mean to horrify anyone, the bologna really is for me, I was just sharing nibbles of it with them til someone (SCRAMBLED! LOL) got greedy, flapped up and grabbed the entire piece! Chicken keep-away ensued. LOL

@GrannyHeeney , all I can see is your chickens comin at you and your bologna like this

Or caviar.....

Someday, I'll get back up to where there's decent salmon fishing.... and now I want to catch a hen, just so I can see what my chickens think of the roe! I suspect there'd be an addiction at first taste...

On topic - cravings are quite real, and can be directly linked to dietary needs. I tend to get iron deficient, to the point of anemia if I don't watch it. When I start craving bloody red meat and spinach, I know I need to boost my iron intake.
