About 24 hrs ago, I caught a broody pecking eggs - 3 to be exact. 1 was dead (partially eaten). 2nd chick in shell died this morning. 3rd chick in shell is still alive. The shell has a hole about the size of a nickel. It's hard to estimate the age of the embryo, but I would guess 14+ days, because it cheeped at noon today as I was changing 'bandage" made of two thin layers of wood shavings (porous and flexible?) covering the hole and secured with scotch tape. However, there were specks of bright red blood. Right now, the egg is in a basket with dampened paper towels underneath and damp washcloth over the top. Chick is partially exposed because both membranes were punctured. Temps today were 101, and 103 is predicted for the next couple of days with only 30% humidity. I'm worried that the chick will simply dry out before it has a chance to hatch... Am I just kidding myself?? Ideas? Thanks ya'll.
