New England.. the cold part.
okay, so i got 8 chicks, and built them a pen with wire all around the sides and bottom... 4 feet high. anyway, 4 weeks ago, in the morning, i noticed a chick outside the fence, and another sitting on top of the fence edge. i put them back inside. then the next day, 2 were out, and i only had 4 inside.. so 2 were 'gone'. i put the 2 back in, and got wire, and covered the top... anyway, on monday (3 days ago) i opened up the pen to feed them, and the door didn't close behind me, and 2 got out. I caught them immediately, and put them back in... at which point i noticed my hand was wet... it was watery blood. so i went back in, and figured out which one was bleeding. it had 2 puncture wounds above and below it's thigh, on it's body... i rinsed it out, and put neosporin on, and taped a paper towel on. It was doing GREAT! Acting just like a normal chicken, eating, walking etc... then today, i bought some peroxide, and when changing the bandage, my 2 little girls helped me pour peroxide on, then dried it off, put the neosporin on, and bandaged it back up. during this process, the chicken closed it's eyes, and went kind of limp, the way that chickens do sometimes when they're on their backs... but then it wouldn't stand.. and was all floppy.. so i put it on the ground, expecting it to stand up, and it had what looked like a crazy seizure, and died. really, really dead.... what happened? (the bite was probably from a fox, but because it has been acting totally normally, i don't think it has rabies...)

they're 2 months old... and there was one hole above the thigh, and one below... we do have foxes, but we live in vermont, and don't even have timber rattlers at our elevation. The thing that baffles me, is that it was totally FINE for weeks. i bandaged it, and it was fine! I put it on it's back, peroxided it, and then poof, it dies, all crazy and violent...

Maybe some kind of allergic reaction to the peroxide

Not imposible

What you can't use is "caine" ingredients: lidocaine, cetacaine, benzocaine, there are a number of them. The pain reliever in Neosporin is pramoxine, which is a distant relative of morphine. Not a problem. And an allergic reaction is very unlikely, though possible, if you'd been using the same stuff to dress her for 3 days.

Chickens do not get rabies, or at least it would be extremely unusual; it is a disease of mammals.

There could have been another injury, an internal one, that you saw no sign of, for example, a cut or bruise of the liver, with internal bleeding. This would be my first guess. There could have been an infection in her blood from the bite that you had no seen no symptoms of. There are several possibilities.

I'm sorry you lost her. Chickens hide their illness well. You did what you could for her.

I'm very sorry about your chicke. Hopefully the others will be OK.

Just a side not about the cage you have them in. I hope you will add a floor and not let them stay too much longer on the chicken wire. As the chicks gain weight the wire can cut right through their feet.
