We got a set of 16 chicks back in March. It first started out as a little project that my husband and my college child were going to do during CoVid so I made them do the whole cleaning their little butts while they were still chicks. We only lost one chick so we have 15 now. 12 of them are what they call ISAs - the 10 hens are red/brown and the 4 roosters are white. We have 3 bantam silkies 1 rooster, and 2 hens.
When my college child went back off to college for the fall, I became a full-time chicken mom.
They have just started laying eggs, but for reasons out of our control, we haven't been able to build the ISAs a full fancy coop with nesting boxes. They are happy to lay the eggs on the straw. The bantams have their own coupe with nesting boxes; I call it a dollhouse coop.
The chickens are friendly and lovely for the most part. The roosters cop an attitude every once in awhile, but just like with my husband, I know how to deal with that, lol.
I don't know if there's such a thing as chicken therapy, but I find that going out there every day to water and feed them, and spend time with them is very calming. Especially since I have opted to teach my college classes from home.
Generally, I love to go camping and hiking and RVing but with the current health situation, and for budgetary reasons, we have done that less and less in this past year.
My American Mastiff, Maeve, loves going out with me to feed and water them. She will wait patiently around the coop and pen until I am finished - well she does like to eat grass while she's waiting. My cat just completely ignores them.
I'm loving these chickens; they remind me of my childhood, and they add a little bit of routine to my day.
I do really need to get rid of some of these roosters though, so I'm looking for either someone to buy them or a butcher that will process them.
