Crazy Chickens Daily (hopefully)

I am now on the way to upgrading my current chicken keeping outfit. I'll have some pictures to show next week. The girls have been doing great, though now Jedi is molting and it looks like someone plucked her entire right wing. Fancy is nearly back to her fabulous self, but I think Gem will follow Jedi in the molt lineup. The twin's crests are starting to turn a more brilliant red, so maybe they will start laying soon. If not, Franny is outdoing herself on eggs. One of the twins and Crown have been having standoffs recently. Not sure if they are roosters trying to establish dominance, or hens establishing pecking order.

I am so bad about not posting daily. With the weather getting colder and the holidays, I don't have much to post about though. I am hoping to start setting up the new chicken run latter this week. I've been hauling the pieces in the back of my truck all weekend. I recently had an issue with Jedi, one of my younger hens. She was in the middle of a molt and started almost being neurologic. She would stagger a bit and crouch down at random times, but still be able to walk and eat. I added some peanut butter, fish oil, and eggs to their morning mash and luckily she seems to have improved. She is also finally filling in her feathers again. She just needs regrowth near her neck, and will be completely back to normal. Franny, the silkie, like to run to the patio with the rest of the flock before coming back to be picked up and carried back to the food bowl.

How long did it take Franny to properly train you? 🤣

Several of mine, tricked by late fall warm weather, began a hard molt that I'm sure they regret now that it's freezing outside. None had the reaction as your poor Jedi, however. Hope Jedi feels much better and continues to quickly return to normal!

A couple months maybe? She spent most of her early days trying to fit in with the flock before giving up and attempting to hatch her own. She got one out of the first hatch. I'm still trying to wrap my head around color genetics. He is a barred(?) black and white with a black Silkie father and a suspect RIR or rose(?) RIR for a mom. Jedi seems to be doing better now, I haven't noticed her staggering for the last few days.

One of my twins is ridiculous. They decided to sleep somewhere not the coop last night. I shut the gate after everyone went to bed (so I thought) and left them for the night. When I went out the next morning to release them, he just zipped up to greet me at the door. While he sometimes will separate and sleep in the quarantine coop, I've had it shut for the past few days. I've never had anyone sleep in the newly set up pullet coop, but I'm assuming that's where he was. I didn't bother with a head check since no one had been using the pullet coop, I didn't even consider it. Guess I will be doing bed checks from now on.
