Hello. I have 6-10 week old pullets. When I'm home I've been letting them out of their run to free range. I live on 1 1/4 acres and their coop is dead in the middle. For the first 3 weeks the chickens stayed home. Now, they keep going to my neighbors. They never sit still and are always running somewhere. Will they calm down and be more apt to stay home when they start laying??

My 5 girls are 15 months old tomorrow and get to roam on 1 acre for around a month now. Yeah I was afraid to let them free range, but I decided to try it. I let them out 2 hours before sunset and after about 5 days, they learned how to get back into their pen.
I look outside often to check on them. They will be visible one minute, then gone the next. I will go from window to window looking for them. Sometimes I have to go outside to find them. So far they haven't gone to the neighbors. But they would have to cross a road, so far they haven't. GC

Mine return to their coop at night, but during the time they are out the NEVER sit still. They crossed the road 6 times yesterday and I had to go get them at my neighbors. I'm just wondering if they will become more content and calm when they get a little older.

My girls don't stay in one spot more than 5 maybe 6 minutes and when one goes to a new spot and the others notice, they all run as fast as they can, cause they might miss out on some goodies. GC

Free range birds will eventually travel far and wide given the opportunity. My younger birds stay closer than the rooster and hens. Every so often I will go outside and call them back to keep them closer but when I'm gone all day so are they (I'm sure!). My rooster will give warning when something is flying over or a dog shows up and they will hide so I haven't really had any predator danger except for when my son decided to take in a couple of strays (which by the way are no longer with us).
