Our 7 chicks are coming up on 3 weeks old. A couple of days ago I gave them chick grit for the first time -- and they went stark raving mad for it. And have gone mad every time I put it in the brooder. They are still on chick starter. What is so magical about the grit?

1) it's different.
2) they need it for digestion.

The man at our feed store told me chicks don't need grit if they are not eating grain....starter feed has all they need...thats all I know so I didn't buy grit... I have some for hens & Roos.......have you heard differently?

They need it for pretty much anything other than their feed. (except soft foods like mashed up eggs, yogurt, etc)

I know that my chicks loved to eat it and I don't really offer them much other than soft treats anyway, but it doesn't hurt them. I spread it out among the wood pellets I use for bedding so they can have something to do in there and not just chow down like food.
