crazy girls think theres only one nest box

I think they do it because they are building a clutch of eggs to hatch, they have to start all over every day because of the thievery.

My hens are goofy. I have 3 different chicken coops. Two are open to free range and one has a pen around it. In our blue coop I have milk crate type nest boxes. I bought them from Walfart since they were on sale. I also liked the colors. I will catch 2 hens sitting in one nest box. These aren't small hens they are light brahmas. There will be a line as well for 1 nest box. Now, in the pink coop no one shares but some will wait for what ever box of the day is. In the yellow coop where the chickens stay penned I have 2 hens in there that are laying. Not yet a year old and one of the hens go broody. In the most popular of the 2 nest boxes. Well, the other hen wants that box too. What does she do??? She gets in the same box and still lays her egg while on top of the broody hen. Have you ever heard of such a thing????

When the hen went broody she had 2 eggs. I stuck 4 from some other hens in there figuring she will only stay for a little while. First time an all. This was before I knew about the 2 hen in the box business. There are now a total of 10 eggs. No more for days which is good. It will be a staggered hatch I'm sure. This will be interesting.

Yea I could have saved a LOT of money on nest boxes when I started My Venture 6 year's ago.We have an original 3 room coop which has 15 nest boxes in it.I house now 14 hen's and 3 roo's.They are all laying in 3 boxes.They have 3 12 ft. roost but gaaaa sleep boxes at night.Can't keep up with the cleaning.I won't even go into detail about some of the other crazy pen's and boxes We made before We Finaly Figured out the hen's. I guess The Hilton isn't always the best place to stay.Dirt Bowl,A Flower Pot, An open bag of bedding,A Yard Sweeper Bin,A Lawn Mower Seat!I Gave UP !I Just keep the boxes as fresh as possible And, GOOD HEN'S EGG's Here <<<<.They like to mess with ya though.,It's Easter Everyday.
