Do you have cold hardy fully feathered healthy birds?

If so, they will be fine with temperatures much lower than your area has ever seen, assuming they have a draft free well ventilated shelter.

I would be afraid that plunging them into a 24 hour dark spell would seriously mess with their circadian rhythm... perhaps sending them into a molt. Not even taking the cold weather into consideration.

Thank you all for great advice. All we did was add an extra layer of straw in the coop and keep water available thru some rare near zero temps. Our girls look great and kept laying throughout.
