Last night one of my white leghorn hens just absolutely would not go in for the night. She free ranges during the day and stays pretty much within the property boundaries at least until last night. She wandered WAY out this time and was cackling like crazy...I don't think she laid yesterday either. She's an ex-batt. hen and we let her do what she wants now.
Well, when I checked she hadn't. This was at 7 pm. They are always in bed by 5 pm. Do you think something may have been wrong or was she maybe just keeping late hours. Please let me know if I need to be watching for something. She's the crazy one of the bunch and kind of has a mind of her own. She's really quite the drama queen and she is the favorite to the rooster that keeps her in check.

Did she finally go into the coop? She's probably fine. My Golden Penciled Hamburgs are the very last ones in the coop - every single night. They push it right up until dark. Everyone else heads in early to get their favorite roost spots - but the hamburgs seem to enjoy the "alone" time in the yard.

If she just missed a day laying an egg, I wouldn't worry. If you continue not to find her eggs in the nest box, you may want to check out the area where she's doing that late evening cackle - mine have layed at 8PM on occasion.

Thank you basicliving~I'm happy to report that Miss Daisy laid her egg today. Must have just wanted to venture away and have that "alone" time you mentioned. I know I like to have mine to so I'm sure she's no different. Just not something she's ever done since residing here. She's such a funny bird as it is (kind of my fave). She's been the class clown so to speak. Maybe she found a new place to range I guess. Thanks for the reply she's eating, drinking and being herself. Guess I may have jumped the gun.

Sorry I forgot to mention that yes she finally went into the coop but not til after dark. However, she went on her own so that made me feel better. Crazy Chicken!!!!

I'm glad Miss Daisy's doing just fine. She sounds like a sweetie and it's so cool you're enjoying an ex-batt hen and giving such a nice home to her.

Funny how the ones that act out end up being the favorites. I knew an English lady with about 8 indoor dogs of various breeds. I commented on how cute her little miniature poodle was once, and she said "OH! She's the baddest I've got. And I love her the most." And I thought that about sums it all up. Somehow the class clowns and mischief makers always end up being the favorites.

Enjoy Miss Daisy and the others!

Take care,
Penny
