I took some cabbage out to the flock a little while ago and I took a banana with me. I sat on my little stool and I peeled the banana and after one little taste it was like attack of the mad chickens! You should have seen them. They went crazy over the banana. Even after they had devoured it, they were pecking at my hands and finger trying to get more! It was so funny! They were fighting over the smallest pieces that fell on the ground.
It was a nice little treat for them and a site to see!

I live in the tropics and we have plenty of banana trees. It can be tempting to feed our chickens a boatload. Use caution as it does give them a liquid brown poop if you feed them too much banana.I used to give my SILKIES 3 Dwarf apple bananas everyday as they flip out when they are eating it ...a FRENZY,for lack of a better word. I have 7 monsters that 3 small size bananas are hand fed to and I see the outcome!

Also be very careful because bananas have been linked to heart attacks in roosters...not sure about the hens, but i've read about roosters having heart attacks after eating bananas.

Maybe it's a potassium thing.

What a fun thing to see them so excited.

I have never picked bananas from a tree. It sounds nice. I know I enjoy having an orange tree since I moved to Phoenix from snow country.

I believe it is safe to give banana at trats every now and then. You would have to give an over load of potassium for that to happen. I have been putting bananas in their oatmeal for awhile now and my chickens and have been just fine!
I found a thread that you might have been talking about and the rooster died while eating. He might have gotten choked.
