We may need to board one of our dogs in about 6 months for a 1 day vaccation,

And I was wondering how the vets keep all of the healthy dogs free of disease?

I know they disenfect EVERYTHING, but don't things like - distemper, Stick to your

clothing, and run in the air? I was just worried about that, because from what I know,

the room where they keep the dogs is almost, if not IN the room where they run tests,

and take dogs back for nail clippings / etc....

Any answers?

I would seriously doubt that dogs being boarded would be in contact with dogs coming in as patients. I worked as an assistant for 3 1/2 yrs and we did boarding as well. Believe me, any vet worth his/her salt would keep healthy animals separated from sick/contageous ones. I wouldn't worry about it, especially since it's only for a day.

Our vet keeps the boarded animals on one side of the building where they do grooming. The sick animals are in the back on the other side. Most private boarding facilities require current vaccinations, but not sure about what a vet might require.

As long as your dog has had it's vaccines there is no reason to worry, if they haven't then there is reason to worry, but most (if not all vets) wont board anyways without current vaccines. The vet I used to work at did keep them in separate wards than the in hospital patients also.

wow. wait. I looked at her papers - she has all her shots.

lol.. Ok anyways thanks for the answers

Do they take them out for potty breaks? If anyone knows. I plan to take her

on an extremely long walk before we take her, then again when we get back.

We used to let the boarded dogs go out into runs for several hours a day, several times a day depending on the weather. We didn't walk them individually unless the owner specifically asked us to. Some vets and kennel facilities will even play with your animal for a small extra fee. We always request this for our dog because he is a cattle dog and needs the exercise!

As long as your dog is up to date on shots, I wouldn't worry about any illnesses. Contagious dogs are usually kept well away from healthy animals in a quarantine area.

I'd say you need to ask at the facility where he will be boarded. My vet has a small practice and only one area of cages. There is no run so they have to hand walk the dogs. Everyone is different.
