Question for Breeders re Mareks vaccination and vets

The incubator is sanitized, the day before I set eggs and plugged in. Day of, I sanitize all my hatching eggs and take them to the brooder room.
Can you kindly detail your process for sanitizing eggs?

I got Odoban to sanitize my incubator, but I am not sure how to approach sanitizing the eggs. I read one article on here about dipping the egg into Odoban (properly diluted, and warm water) for 60 seconds, but if there is dirt or poop, won't the egg need to be cleaned first? I also bought Manna Egg wash pro, which would clean the dirt and sanitize bacteria. But then I didn't want to dip the egg into Odoban after the protective bloom was taken off, but if I don't wash it first, then any Marek's might not get killed? It feels like a catch 22.

Thank you.🩷

Sure thing.

I follow the article with one change that I've made, I dip them for 10 seconds then let them set for the remaining 50 seconds then I give them a quick rinse. I don't know about the egg cleaner, but with the 60 second soak, when I do the rinse all debris comes right off and I'm comfortable with the "clean" I'm left with. I have no studies or hard data to back me up, but this is what I do and I'm having good hatches with it.

If eggs are dirty the quick dip in the diluted Odoban doesn't drop too much ick into your solution, all the ick comes off with the rinse. If you really want to he sure of the clean, maybe do the dip, wait and gently wipe the debris from the egg, rinse with clean water and repeat the Odoban dip? I have no experience here but I'd be curious of your results if you try it!

Thank you for the additional info on your technique! You saw that article, too? :) I got moderately confused because Virkon-S was saying 10 min to kill Marek's in the chart I'd found for it's use. Then I was reading for Odoban it is 60 seconds to kill viruses, on a clean, non-porous surface.

I'll see what happens, I'm moderately worried about the bloom being compromised and losing too much moisture out of the egg. The Manna Egg Wash pro has instructions for use before incubating eggs, too, and I'd also saw a few folks using hydrogen peroxide on BCM eggs whickh helped hatch rates. I got some of the eg wash at my TSC, and it's all dusty, no one buys it, it's $$ too, at $16, but looks like it will last a long time.

I don't want to derail the discussion too far, but wanted to drop here that I'd read another experiment where they used three types of disinfectants sprayed on hatching eggs (i.e.Biosentry-904, Egg-Washer-Pro(now Manna Pro Egg Wash) and Virkon-S) and the hatchability of the chicks after. It's under: "Egyptian J. Anim. Prod., 52, Suppl. Issue, April (2015): 115-125Issued by The Egyptian Society of Animal Production EFFECT OF DISINFECTANTS, FLOCK PHYSIOLOGICAL STATUS,SEASON AND STORAGE PERIOD OF BROILER BREEDER EGGS ONFIELD HATCHABILITY AND HATCHERY OPERATION QUALITY UNDER NEW-SALHEYA CITY SITUATION"
(sorry it's "yelling", that is how they had it *haha*)

I got my incubator sterilized with Odoban earlier, now letting it run for a few hours before I sterilize the eggs. I had to use a new bastor injector syringe to get something with 1 oz measurement on it for the Odoban. *haha*

Odoban does not kill the Marek's disease virus. It does not. I contacted the manufacturer and asked. Some people assume it kills the Marek's disease virus because it kills a human herpes virus that is NOT the same as Marek's.

Virkon S DOES kill the Marek's virus.

I skim read the article, that's a lot of info. I saw an article from another site recebtly that was showing an improvement in hatch rates when the eggs had been sanitized. Very interesting!

I'm trying to get some Virkon-S and it seems to be out of stock in the reasonable size and price many places. Really frustrating. I should have bought some last year. Blargh.

I've been reading, out of interest, this study done with Oregano essential oil being used as one of the disinfectants:

"Comparing the effectiveness of egg disinfectants against bacteria and mitotic indices of developing chick embryos"

Yeah, the studies tend to be super dense and it takes me a bit to interpret what the different things mean. "Can I have that in regular speak please?" :D
But I'm just so interested in that sanitizing has such an improvement with hatching, when all these years I was thinking that doing anything to the egg before hatching was going to ruin it/make it worse.

Yes, it is a big deviation from traditional practices of not washing / cleaning hatching eggs and doing anything that may disturb the bloom. In my experience, I don't get blood rings, I've had a few quitters but they just quit and the veins fall apart, but I'm not getting those rings that they say are caused by bacteria. I'm not getting the nasty incubator smell either. I was warned about the smell the first time I hatched and it was before I was cleaning the eggs, and there was definitely a smell, with sanitizing the eggs first it's not the same at all!

I don't remember a smell ever, but I am in Arizona where it is rather dry, so maybe that is why? I also try to dry hatch. I have gotten the blood ring, but I thought that was because the veins were dispersing? Interesting.

My Virkon-S was shipped out Monday from Nebraska, got to a town near Phoenix on Friday (next stop would have been PHX, then my town), then went to Albuquerque!!! I have another package, also sent Monday, that got to that town on Friday, and is stuck there. Kind of upsetting to pay $19 for shipping for the one that is stuck and it can't get here in a week. I hope they don't get lost in the mail.

I'd decided not to wait for the Virkon-S, and set my current batch of eggs Thursday night. I washed them with the Manna Pro egg cleaner, but I forgot to check the water temp with a bare hand and it was kind of cold the second batch I put through. I candle tonight, so we'll see what happens. I'm keeping the humidity up a bit ore than I usually do ( I like to dry hatch), because I know after washing eggs the shell can become brittle. At least that is my experience after a time I washed poopy eggs so they'd be ready for eating.

@JennyHeidewald

So how was your hatch rate? I'm Marek's positive around here, so I read lots of info.

(Everything I can find.)

I *think* I want to order some Chinese Skullcap since I've got a fresh hatch in my basement. The first one emerged on March 25th.
