After realizing that the eggs my silkie had been sitting on were all dead this weekend, I went looking for chicks. The co-op had cream legbars. I talked to my sister yesterday and told her I was getting chicks today for my hen betty and if the only chicks I could find were big chickens, I would rehome the bigger birds to her. I hope the legbar are smallish. They are so cute.

My neighbor down the street uses Cream Legbars for his organic egg sales. They are full size and produce sky blue eggs. They are supposed to be "auto-sexing", that is the chicks are easily identifiable by sex when they hatch. The females have dark chipmunk like stripes that are continuous. The males are lighter and normally have a white spot on their head. I'm hatching some eggs now that include 5 eggs from Cream Legbar hens.

So cute, I have 4 Creme Leg Bars in my group of 1 week olds now. Sure hope they grow up so I can see what they look like. I think the females are only supposed to be 5 lbs., so on the smaller side. They are joined by 2 EE & 4 Blue Australorps. Have fun.

I got in my head that I really only have room for batam breeds. That could change as I see how big they get. Bigger birds would be less of a target for neighbor's cats. The cats are some what reluctant to come in fenced garden area after my dog chased one of them back and forth in garden four times jumping over pepper, daylilies, little chicken fences before I got dog to stop and cat made it over the fence. They lay in yard and watch.
These chicks are so cute. I hope they work out as it would be hard to rehome and start over with new birds.
