Correction....the Legbar cockerels that meet my breeding program's requirements for cream have no red on their back, Cream colored saddle feathers, and only light chestnut on the shoulders.

Other's claim to have isolated the cream gene but are breeding cockerels that don't pass my cream test. I guess there can be some variation, but this is what I have found and what I look for.

If you would not have said that these were side by side comparisons of Cream and Gold, I would have said to myself the one on the bottom/ left is obviously Cream and the one on the right is probably Cream but he is one of the many I am on the fence about and would test mate if I liked him otherwise. I say this becasue the SOP allows for some chestnut including chestnut on the back so chestnut there isn't a deal-killer for me (or so I thought). I also was leaning Cream becasue when I look at his secondaries, I do not see any gold or brown all I see is the proper grey barring (unless again this is something missing from the photo which may vary well be the case). So I was thinking that he is Cream with excessive amounts of red enhancement (which you don't want anyways, but is a separate issue from Gold).

The more CLs posted and comparisons the better--its all very educational! Thanks Again!

Curtis ref your Cream roo- from the pic his tail seems like a chocolate barred color instead of dark grey...is that from the Cream gene and maybe a tell tale sign (lol no pun intended) or is the coloring off from the pic.

The ones I was on the fence about all had gold on the secondary. If you are not seeing gold or brown color on the secondaries, then I would guess that you have cream cockerels and they will produce cream offspring.

No the brown Barring isn't from the cream gene. He must just have other genes causing that color.

I have some hatching eggs coming. If I read to you post correct, the 1st photo bottom rooster and the 2nd photo left rooster is the one to keep for breeding trait. Is the comb also need to be straight?

The Proposed APA Standard of Perfection is HERE and the PCGB Standard is HERE. There are lots of things to consider for breeders, but yes, cockerels require erect combs (hen should have a flopped over comb), and the "Cream" Legbar should have Cream Plumage.

The female comb can be both erect or flopped.

Thanks...Flopped combs on hens is acceptable but not required.
