I went down to the Stock Show yesterday to check out the poultry. Very tiny show with just over 500 chickens and most of those are showmanship (4H) birds. I did however talk at great length to a very nice Leghorn breeder who also happens to be an APA judge. He was very kind and walked me through his procedure for caging his birds, gave some secrets on displaying and also gave me his card. He will be an invaluable resource in the future.

I did ask him about weights and he said that he never weighs any birds in competitions. If you have to weigh one you have to weigh them all and that is impossible with the sheer numbers in shows--the big shows will have over 20K birds in them. So it is experience of the judge with the breeds and comparisons between birds for weight both over and under.

Dude, my current understanding might be limited but I can read and have a Masters degree so I know I can learn. I've been in the Marine Corps and had to make some very objective decisions - being an artist has nothing to do with anything being out of my reach. Could you be anymore full of yourself and insulting....

So looking at a feather, all the white bands should be about the same length and same for the black. I have one pullet (left in the above photo) that has what I think of as uneven barring--on her neck hackles some of the white and black bands are twice the length as others. Look at the one at 12 o'clock with thicker bands, and the one just to the left has some really thin bands, almost like one of the black was cut in half by white once again, but not all of them. There are some white bands which are narrow and some that are really thick--there is variance so thus not even. In a male breast, since each feather would have a random barring pattern and the barring varies from feather of feather, this uneven barring would make the breast look a splotchy, messy pattern (or really lack of pattern) and no even lines anywhere. What do you think of my take on this?

I think you are saying what I am currently envisioning - the same length for the black and white and the resultant uneven nature of the look when not so as a whole. I will have to pull some feathers on both my girls and boys and see how they differ especially since I have a few patterns at hand on the roosters.

as Tim said it, its not Fluke, the males with good pattern have the genes for that and would pass it to their progeny ******* EDIT ****** and Sorry guys if sometimes I can sound very crude, I can piss people off, seeing numbers on your head all the time can do that to you, whe you see people and pics of birds and all you see are numbers it can do that to you... for example not so long ago I go Steen all ****** off and now we are best of friends.... so Sorry BlackBird

Yeah weve had some diffrences of opinion, i think we both have a problem with how we word things sometimes. I know its not always intentional. Sometimes it can be frustrating but im glad you help. Everyones diffrent and we all think diffrent. That can caues conflict sometimes but i think it helps more than it hurts. Seeing things from lots of diffrent angles helps us to see the full picture better and keeps us as a group from missing things that are important

There is a lost art it would seem called Etiquette that I would like to think still hold true today. I have no problem disagreeing about chickens or admitting how little I know about this or any other topic as I do love a good debate and view myself as a life long learner. This is an online forum where we accept people at face value, or even less since it is the internet and all that happens here is not as it may be in real lire. But I draw the line, and see no reason to blindly accept or put up with anyone placing their personal self-prescribed pedigree or requisite abilities above another's or as a reason to degrade anyone in personally directed downgrading statements. I think everyone should be able to share what ever knowledge they wish to dispense upon others and disagree or not, without speaking to the receptors ability to decipher or mentally manipulate it. Education or intellect is no reason for being rude. If so, Sallie Mae, holder of my student loans, knows I've got plenty of reasons of my own then. The statement made was flagged by a friend of mine and subsequently removed. I've had enough.

The 4 year old is taken care of so going to have some coffee and attempt to go outside into that frigid tundra out there and stare at my chickens some.

I need to make some decisions on these boys.
