Cream Legbar Working Group: Standard of Perfection

I kinda think his comb looks exactly like one of my Roos. To me it looks like the s fold in the front pushes the points to the right. the last two points go upright but then the blade flops back to the left. Ears and wattles are pretty bad. I would almost bet this is the roo that my friend from the UK told me came in first in a show. It had to of been best of breed. The second place roo had a beard i was told. His wattles dont look cupped to me they look taco shelled

When you look at the GFF offspring below that ChicKat posted he shows the same comb with the flop on the blade his ear lobes are way better but his points are worse and the wattles are horrid. You can almost see the crest coming up above the blade on the other side of his head. such a large crest on one side is whats pushing the blade over. At least from what ive seen in my roo this wont be fixed with age. The points could get better with age. Id almost bet his comb is in that ackward stage as its getting bigger. Some people might have thought that i was flock bashing jill or being hard on her birds but i share the opinion of my UK friend that her birds will just hurt our breeding programs more than help. Also does this gff farms roos legs look willow or yellow or somewhere in between. It might just be my screen but they look willow

Im kinda sad i was thinking the 2013 hens was looking good and i should have got some. I dont think ill be buying any GFF farms hens or roos for new blood for some time now. I cant slide backwards in all my hard work just for better wing bays.

'Taco shells', I stand corrected!

Now I kinda feel bad I didn't preface my critique with a statement that I do appreciate all of what Jill has done for the breed. The critique was meant to be a demonstration that no birds are perfect and there can be serious flaws even in a noted breeders stock. I think that is actually encouraging in many ways since the US breeders are working toward the standard. It seemed appropriate, since this is the SOP thread and we were critiquing the leghorn to start looking at CL stock with a critical eye, too.

As I said before, some people will be happy with her stock and it will be an asset to their breeding program because it will complement their flaws. Surefire way of getting Cream, for instance. Off the top of my head I can think of 5 breeders who have seriously been working on Cream Legbars that this stock might do more harm than good, one of them being you, Steen.

As for this Cockerels leg color, I would call it pale yellow. It may be the photo and the colors could be quite different in real life. To me this is willow(FaverollesxWelsummer):

I do think there are issues with her birds but they also have their benefits. I would not have thought of your comments as bashing. Not everyone has to have a positive or optimistic opinion of any given occurrence and some can agree with that assessment and others can choose to see things in a different light. I'm a big fan of the ability and need for dissent. Given Walt's time periods her 5 years would make her still in the novice stage and just because someone has show birds does not mean that the flock is show quality in my mind.... I think of how many Bev Davis birds I have gone through to where now I really am not impressed by whose bird's lineage most poultry are supposed to be. I think that it will be just as it always is. Some folks will by the birds for the benefit of the color and work them to a better form and some will buy them for the color and breed them like crazy and sell sell sell. When I said I was focusing on color folks seemed to have the opinion that I was doing so at the expense of everything else. When I said I was looking at my plan as a 'painted barn' they missed the 'whole bird' aspect of that term and I see this as a barn in need of a few renovations. This bird has issues yes, but in my mind, no more or no less than the birds we have now. I think that if you have a thoughtful breeding plan they can be incorporated in a positive aspect. If the priorities are not to improve the breed or are more financially motivated it would not matter how good they started off as keeping them that way would not be of consequence.

On my screen the legs look not pale but not a deep yellow, but yellow none the less.

Whats the thoughts on wattles of the gff roo

I think we established earlier that although everyone is calling this the GFF roo that it is actually one of the roos from the flock that GFF imported from, not one of their own.

Neither here nor there with your question though.

I don't care for his wattles, too wrinkly and cup-like for me. Length is decent to my eye.

Ive maid allot of progress with my roosters this year but my only crested hen of good quality from this year has cream barring but the cream barred neck feathers are outlined with that yellowish cream. Did i miss why this happens or have we yet to figure it out.

pics of such a bird are welcome

I cant get close enough with my phone and its too bright. Maybe when the sun goes down i can. Ive been needing to get a good camera up here for weeks now. Ill try to remember tomorrow morning. I also kept a pure cream non crested for experiment sake only. she is really grey but has black tips all over. I want to see what she produced for the fun of it. I think you would like to see her to marvin
