Cream Legbar Working Group: Standard of Perfection

I got photos back today for the new owner of Ice Jr. (at the urbancoopcomany).

See below.

I have had multiple people say after working with their flock for a year that straight combs and large crest aren't possible on cream Legbar cockerels. This is what I have been seeing on a few of mine. Unfortunately the cock bird that I used in the pairing for this handsome man is no longer on my property. Some from other pairings are close to this one though. At least I know what is possible and have a goal of what to shoot for.

Yes...He is from your Ice. I wanted to keep him since the comb/crest on Ice was the best I had seen, and Ice Jr. was another positive step in that direction. I sold Ice Jr. in a trio with one of the Ice/Robin hens you hatched in 2012 a 15 month old hen I hatched from Lonnyandrinda's flock. I am hopping that the comb/crest will carry on in that line.

There was some talk about 'prepotent rooster' - awhile back, I think in another thread. Basically, the bottom line of that I think is homozygous -- what you see is what you get type of thing.

Since he is getting "older" -- I keep looking for a replacement for him...and not finding a rooster I like better...maybe his son growing out here now will be the one.

The first group of cockerels that I got that were from Ice X Robin all had big crests and thin floppy combs. The following year the hen paired with Ice was a hen with the smallest comb I had in the flock (and she was the top layer in my flock and the hens with the best tail in the breeding pen). The results the 2nd year I was really happy with. My next step was to get that comb/crest and tail on to my larger cream colored cockerels.

My theory is that breeding cockerels with good combs to hens that are daughter of cockerels with good combs should produce a high percentage of good combed cockerels and that good combed cockerels to small combed hens with achieve similar results.

Woohoo! Welcome! Have you checked into Fall shows yet? And are you a member of the Cream Legbar Club yet? we have lots of great info there and here at BYC!

Poultryshowcentral.com is a great site to find poultry shows in your area and also a great resource for show preparation. And the Cream Legbar Club can be found at creamlegbarclub.com Make sure you print out a copy of the standard if you show your Cream Legbars in the next few years ( it's not accepted by the APA yet, so the judges need the standard to compare and judge the birds by). hth
