I have a few cans of just expired Cream of mushroom soup and was wondering if I could feed them to the chickens (in moderation of course) as a treat. I can't find anything about that on the web, so I figured I'll ask..maybe someone knows..lol.

It is pretty high in salt...I'd eat it myself if it just expired and isn't rusted/dented/etc.

Just so you know chicken feed is usually about 0.5% salt (never more than 1%) and too much salt is bad for chickens. So if it were me, I'd dilute it well and make sure I put it in a shallow pan that all 10 of my older girls could crowd around and lap it up.

I give all our kitchen scraps to them- but if high in salt I try to dilute it or wash off the salt if it is a solid food. Or give it over a period of several days.

I'd eat them myself. Expiration dates on canned goods are more a regulatory thing than a safety thing. We had stovetop that "expired" in 09 for dinner this week. No one died.

That said, if you want to feed it to your birds, I'd dilute it and just go easy.

Thanks for the quick input!!! I wouldn't feed them a whole lot of it.. just a little bit... as a treat so to speak.. I know it's still good, or I wouldn't give it to them, I just figure I hardly ever eat it and it's just gonna sit there some more and why not. They love cooked rice too and I know I have too much salt in there for them, but I do give it to them.. a little bit at a time and only every once in a while... they enjoyed the soup by the way.. :) They mostly get their chicken feed and scratch and they get mealworms as a treat every day.. so this was just an extra.
