Yeah! I'm happy to hear it! I think they're so beautiful. I'll be getting mine in about a month. We'll have to keep in touch. If I start breeding them, we can trade roosters out someday to mix up the gene pools a bit. Maybe we can bring this heritage breed back! Good luck!

I LOVE my Javas. They are dependable layers, spunky, as well as excellent broodies/mamas.

Since you have Javas too, we'll need to keep in contact with you as well. Do you breed them? What colors do you have? I'm actually not too far from you. I'm headed to Bay City, MI this weekend, but could easily drive up for a chicken trade in the future!

That is a GREAT idea! I think it is important to have self sustaining Java flocks spread all over the country. That way if something bad were to happen to one flock, the breed would continue. I had never thought about being a breeder, but as I was doing "honey do's" today, I started considering it. Not for profit,or as a business, but to help others interested in Javas get started. Who knows? This is cool!

For better management of the cockerals (no fighting, no crowing) and better weight gain learn to caponize them. When you do place your order for chicks, consider ordering a few inexpensive cockeral chicks to learn anatomy and try caponizing. It really isn't too difficult, and the resulting birds are delicious!

I looked it up...because I didn't know anything about the subject...and found it was an internal surgery. Do you have to use anesthesia?MiF

There are many flocks all over the country - and using these two sources is THE best way to find what you're looking for - eggs, chicks or even full-grown birds. Someone was selling their flock of 8 hens and 1 roo due to too many birds....so it's possible.

Great people on both these sites - very very helpful! The Yahoo group you might need to register first - I believe you do. Sorry for missing that point....
