Creating Barred Marans

Aloha kākou,

I was thinking about creating a Barred Marans. So I have questions about the genetics. I donʻt know how to make Punnet Squares here but Iʻll see what I can do.

So the first possible cross could be a Barred Rock Roo over a BCM hen:

B Bb B

B Bb B


So, everyone will be barred. You cross these(from different parents) then get:


B -

B BB B

b Bb b




Now that we have 2 barred roosters, how do we know which rooster is the homozygous one?

So if we breed a Homozygous rooster to a barred hen, would it be autosexing?

The second possibility could be a BCM male over a Barred Rock female(which is what I have). I donʻt really want to do this because egg color would be compromised too much.


First generation:

B -

b Bb b

b Bb b



Then breed this heterozygous male over another barred rock female:


B -

B BB B

b Bb b


We will still have a BB and a Bb.
