creating sex-links?

i have read that some breeds crossed together will produce sex-links, but will crossing chickens of the same breed of different coloration(such as coockoo silkies and red silkes) produce sex-links

The answer to your question is ....no. It will only produce the same type bird with different/mixed coloration.

GmacD - To get a Black Sex Link - you cross a Rhode Island Red Roo with a Barred Rock Hen.
To get a Red Sexlink - cross a Rhode Island Red with a Delaware Hen.

As for crossing the same of colaberation I do not believe so, But not an expert on Silkies, though I would seriously like to have a couple if I could get it past DH

You can get sexlinks within a breed. If you crossed the a red, buff, or partridge silkie with a cuckoo silkie you would get black star colored chicks. There are many many sexlink crosses even within the same pattern like gold laced/BLR rooster on silver laced hens will make black star chicks. I am pretty sure you can even do black or blue males on silver females (silver laced, silver pencilled, barred) you get silver males and black/blue females.
We are going to do a new sexlink cross with the gold pencilled hamburg roo on silver pencilled hamburg hens.

As the above poster said....a red silkie male, on a cuckoo silkie female would work. Both would be black downed at hatch but only the males would have a white spot on their head.
a black or blue male on silver female wouldn't really work as the difference is relying upon two sex linked alleles. The best sex link for blacks would be black male on barred female; of course the female will carry silver but that would be incidental to the barring.
I'm not sure what black star birds are but gold laced wyandotte male on silver laced wyandotte female gives the gold/silver sex linked cross; the chicks won't be black. Females will be gold laced & the males kind of messy yellow colour (& laced).
There are a few different genes which are sometimes used for sex links. Barring, silver, rate of feather growth, leg colour (Inhibitor of dermal melanin), dwarf are the most frequently used.
