This is a new to me breed, and they’re supposed to be autosexing, right? Females have darker chipmunk coloration and males are lighter with light spots on their heads, or so I have read. I ordered 3 pullets, was sent 4, and I have 2 darker chicks with light spots on their heads, and 2 lighter chicks with no spots. Help?

I answered another one of these post types today, so if this is a duplicate to you, please forgive me.

Cream Legbar hens are single barred and males double barred to create the autosexing.

That means the chicks *should* be as follows:
Females darker chipmunk with a small white head dot (sometimes nondiscernable)
Males lighter chipmunk with a noticeable head dot

The breed does not always have standardized colors as it should. It seems to be still developing in the United States for quality. I have true Cream Legbars and those that are "Creole" or "Golden" as apparently they are split to gold/silver.

And that can change the down fluff.

*Usually* the darker chipmunks will be the girls and the lighter the males...that is typically standard...dots aren't always as clear as they should be in my experience (and I'm not a CL breeder...just have used CL to breed olive eggers).

I did see your response in my breed thread posting, and I appreciate your knowledgeable input. I’m feeling frustrated to have paid extra for sexed chicks, from a breed that is autosexing no less, and to have possibly been given two males. I know that “extras” are frequently male, which in and of itself is frustrating when one is paying for pullets, but if I have two boys that goes above and beyond just the bonus chick. I have the time and space to grow them out and confirm their sex, so I guess I will be playing the wait and see game. I also purchased 3 French black copper maran pullets and received 4, so I’m already stuck waiting for them to feather in!

I hatched 2 CC legbar chicks earlier this year. I got one of each sex. I did notice the female has developed a cute crest while the male has lightened up a lot and has no noticeable crest. They are 6 weeks old now.

Bresse farms has a sale on legbars $ 4.99 for pullets only if you're interested.https://www.bressefarms.com/chicks--juveniles--starter-birds.html

Just a little follow up on this thread, all four chicks are currently feathering in beautiful salmon breasts, so despite their differences in appearance I feel confident they’re all pullets. :celebrate

Thanks for the update! I was going to ask if they all turned out to be pullets! That's what it looked like to me :)
