We just got our first crested duckling. Her name is snoopy and she is blind in one eye.
I noticed alot of colored cresteds. Are there different breeds/colors or is it a result of crossing? Snoopy will probably white. No pic as of yet

Different breeds can be crested, Cayugas who are blk can be crested, about the only breed i have seen is Muscovy and not sure if I've ever seen a crested call duck.

I will be getting a crested duck from Metzer farms. Do they require any extra/special care then a regular duck?? I have 9 ducks, we will be getting rid of one and then getting three more. This is my first time ever getting crested. So if you have any additional info I'd love to hear it :)

Just checking, but you are only getting one crested, correct? The reason I ask is because you should not breed a crested duck to a crested duck--it will result in a 25% overall mortality rate for the ducklings--the ones that are homozygous for the crested trait (living crested ducks carry only one copy of the gene). I am not sure specifically about care, but I have read that the crest is due to a skull deformity, and so I would be careful with their heads. The size of the crest is related to the severity of the cranial defect.

I found a thread on here related to this issue:

Good luck!

Hello ducky friends! This was my first season with ducks. My Magpie Crested and a White Crested appear to both be dudes. I had really been shooting for all females, but since I do have some gentlemen, I think I would like to let them be family men, instead of meat. My Magpie is very smart, and a good care taker so far. I love his personality! They both get along with our hens thus far. I think I have found a place I can get just plain magpie females next season, so that they have partners, and also this should cut out the crested mortality rate. Do any of you breed your ducks? Do you think making them wait for mates until next springs girls mature is too long?
