Hi everyone,

My poor babies can't see due to the feathers covering their eyes. I would like to clip the feathers around the eyes but am afraid of bleeding. I read if you trim to short the feathers will bleed. What can be done to prevent this and what do I do if they do bleed? I have to do something for these poor babies, now 5 1/2 months old.

Thanks
Kathy

I was looking for ideas for this too, so I'll be looking for any answers you get. I didn't really want to trim their feathers, but I did see someone suggest using a pony tail holder to pull up the feathers. I tried this, but my Polish freaked out trying to get it off their heads and 1 ended up scratching her eye. It wasn't on tight, but I guess was just annoying. So I was looking for better suggestions. I feel sorry for them. They are alway lost in the backyard and we've seen them walk into walls, etc. Can't wait to see anyone elses suggestions.

Thanks for the replies guys. I don't know how far is to far when cutting the feathers. I think I would have to cut off a fair amount for it to do any good.

I also heard about the bands for putting up the feathers. I did not try it but was afraid if they did get them off one would end up eating it and choking. I am paranoid about those things.

Anyone else have anything to add?

Thanks
Kathy

Hi everyone,

Well, I went out with haircutting scissors. The chickens for the most part were very cooperative. I sat them on my lap and started clipping. It went very well. No signs of blood. If anyone knows what to do if there is bleeding I would appreciate knowing just in case I have any problems in the future.

Thanks
Kathy

Well I haven't done the trimming yet so I haven't had bleeding from the crest, but when the tail feathers have been ripped out and bleeding I've used a cold damp paper towel to wipe away the blood and stop the bleeding.

ETA: Glad all went well for you. I maybe doing the same for my girls soon.
