"Crevecoeur" Remorse

I could never cull, but I do re-home when a chicken negatively impacts the flock. I haven't regretted one loss, either. All for the best of the flock!

I don't think my SLW is the problem this time, though. It's more that the crevs don't respect the pecking order that gets them head-plucked. She's #1 in the pecking order, but leads without bullying. She doesn't go after any of my other birds unless they ask for it (snatch) during treats. Though she's not a friendly lap bird, she is nice to look at:

I just listed the crevs on my local chicken club site and on a WNY site, so we'll see how things go after that. If the Polish start going bald, then I will know that I was wrong!

'Culling' means removing that individual from the flock, however it's done. Sometimes it's rehoming, sometimes it's about the freezer.
Sometimes an individual bird just doesn't work out in the flock, and keeping that individual disrupts the whole group, or whatever. Then the best thing to do is to remove that individual, for everyone's sake.

Thanks to everyone who helped me process what I needed to do. I found a great home for them with an experienced keeper who takes in rescues and has an older flock of 8+ years that no longer lay. She understands they are flawed and was still eager to accept them. I offered them up for free on two local groups and had so much interest that I was actually able to ask questions and choose the best home for them. Already making my wish list for new Spring chicks!!

So happy you got a good resolution to your problem! 😊
They are in a great situation, and the woman who took them in sends me updates with photos/video. They seem very happy in their new situation and their crests are finally growing back after being nearly bald for 8 months due to feather picking. I'm glad I finally did it and it was definitely for the best.
