when my husband and I decided to raise chickens as my folks did years ago,i studied a long time (2 years) to find just what we were looking for in not only egg production, but looks and temperament as well.
I went to mcmurray site and ordered 3 types. buff orpingtons, black jersy giants, and white leghorns. (mainly for eggs)...
turns out, they all have different personalities. but out of the three,i would say the jersy giants have far better temperments than any of them ! and the uffs a close secong. the white leghorns have not only turned broody twice on me,but they are also very picky at who is watching them while laying an egg. and they pick at the other s and run them out of the hutch until their done ! "mindy" in particular is quite mean to the others until shes done laying. but very good flock, and all of them protect each other when there are neighbor dogs about too
I have not lost a hen yet,and they are going on 2 years old come may.
for tho who are starting out,i would highly recommend jersy giants as your start up flock !
