Hi, I’m needing help and encouragement. I’ve never had to cull a bird but I wonder at what point I need to give up.

My frizzle salmon Faverolles hen is struggling with loss of balance/coordination. This is the second frizzle I’ve had this happen to. ( refer to previous post 🫤) ultimately after crop feeling a few weeks, the cold snap got get and she passed. So, I’m a week into crop feeding. I have read w bantams treat for coccidiosis but also give tons of vitamins ( although I know typically you can’t give vitamins w Corid treatment due to thiamine production or something)
What I’m giving is: Baycox, Corid, vit e w selenium ( goat paste), exact parrot food, hydro hen, and liquid vit b. I’m following @casportpony protocol on crop feeding.
Is there any other Magic meds? This happened after I had some dumor feed thar that wouldn’t eat, so I shook it out of my feeder and it may have been moldy. Moldy feed is what got my last frizzle sick. I didn’t see any actual mold. At this point is a charcoal/salt flush even helpful? I’m at a loss. I hope it’s not mareks? No one else has symptoms. Maybe frizzles are too weak for me 🥹
Any advice? I’ll attach a pic. She’s basically on her hocks, feet out front. Poop is strong smell and more white. Today is day 7 since it happened.
I

I'm sorry that your hen is sick, it is a hard place to be in.

Usually with coccidiosis, you will see improvement pretty quick with giving treatment. It sounds like the tricky part here is that we don't really know what is causing the failure to thrive, but when you find the right treatment you usually get results within days, not weeks.

Mareks is a possibility. If you watch some videos of other chickens with mareks online (depressing, I know), you will know pretty quick if that is the problem.

They can get infections from contaminated feed. If that was the case you would want to give an antibiotic. Something would be off if two birds got sick from something like that so close together, that is pretty uncommon.

Everyone has to decide when enough is enough. Some people cull at the first sign of illness. Personally, I think if you exhaust your ability to help them and they can't enjoy their lives, it is time to help them go. It sounds like you can try to find the cause for a little longer, because it is still mysterious at the moment. If you try a couple more things and they don't work, know you are doing the best thing for her by culling her.

Listing some more symptoms or more pictures or a video would help someone on here to hook onto something that may be going wrong. You can put the video on youtube or facebook and provide a link.

Can you take some poop samples to your vet to see if Coccidiosis is part of the issue?

I'm not sure if I'd give Baycox and Corid together.
What's in the liquid B vitamin? Is there B1(Thiamine)?
How much goat paste are you giving? Normal dosing for a goat is 2ml which provides around 200IU vitamin E and 23mcg Selenium.

If you are treating neurological issues you want to give 400IU Vitamin E and yes...B1(Thiamine). Selenium can be overdosed, max for a chicken is 25mcg, so this is the reason why it's suggested to give human vitamins (400IU Vitamin E, 1/4 tablet B-Complex) and egg, tuna or sunflower seeds for Selenium.

I get throwing everything at her that you can think of, but you may want to rethink this. Unfortunately, there are no magic meds.

Choose one treatment and go with it. Finish it and then choose another.

Only you can determine when you and she have had enough.

Marek's or moldy or ....???? There's really now way to know what's causing the decline unless you lose her and investigate further by having some diagnostics ran through your state lab. You live in TN, so contact your lab and talk with them. I can't remember but I think your state offers some services for free or at a greatly reduced price.

Thanks state lab is a wash. They expect you to put the bird on Ice and it’s over an hr away. I attempted years ago and said never again thanks though. I’m going to give baytril twice a day and continue w vitamins. She’s miserable and aftef this week I’ll probably put her down.

I'm so sorry, I can only imagine how harrowing this all must feel for you. I have been blessed that when one of mine gets really sick or dies they have given me some time to heal from it.

I've never had one, but I'll bet that frizzles have more delicate of a disposition. When you feel ready and are able to, you could try getting a standard salmon faverolle if you like the breed. I have one, and she has survived so many different weird things that it amazes me.

Just post if you any other help. Best of luck, whatever happens.

Thank you! Yes I threw some of the eggs in the incubator when she got sick. But the one I think that is hers isn’t fertile. They are definitely more fragile. I guess that breed is too fragile for me 🥹

Me too! I'll bet folks who keep fragile breeds lose a bunch of chickens, too. It is probably just part of it. At this point in my life I need hearty breeds, for sure.

I appreciate that! I’ve gotten really busy lately and not able to devote as much time to my birds. And this was my dream breed. But i have to be cognitive of my limitations 🫤 I’ve never had to cull a bird before. So I’m not looking forward to this.

Yeah, there is a ton of info on here about it, and a lot of people that would be happy to answer questions. It is not easy, but a least none of us are alone in the experience.

Maybe in the future it will be a better fit. I hope so.
