Crop issue

Thanks for the suggestions :)

I tried this morning to follow your advice StinkyAcres, and I managed to get a bit of cream in her mouth, but she’s pretty feisty. I’ll keep practicing, seems like a good skill to have!

She’s still not interested in cooked egg, but she drank a good amount of water and her crop felt better this morning than I’ve felt it since this began! yAy!

Thank you both!!
Glad to hear it! Does she have a name?

Big bird 💛

Here’s the gangs, all six of them, she’s the third from the left

She’s getting better! I’m so relieved :) When I felt her crop this morning I almost couldn’t find it! Yay

Im giving her the miconazole twice a day, and getting better at getting it in her mouth by myself.

She still wouldn’t eat cooked egg this morning, so I gave her some soaked chicken food and a few rolled oats and she ate some!

I’ll definitely keep course and do the full 7 day treatment of miconazole

Thanks so much again for your help 💛

That is great news! Even if she recovers this time, do keep an eye on her. Crop problems are often recurring. You're doing a great job.

Yay Big Bird!!

Last day of the miconazole!
Might do another day or two just to be sure, but she seems back to normal. She sure got hungry fast! Felt like I was feeding a baby velociraptor in the days where I was trying to limit her food a bit, haha. Today she’s back in with the flock- and has access to unlimited regular food- yikes. I will keep a close eye on her.

Thanks :)

Yay! So glad she is feeling better! Keep an eye that the flock doesn’t pick on her, also, if she’s been separated for a while. Reintegration can be rough!

Hello again,

So I got up just before the ladies this morning to be able to check Big Birds crop- and it was pretty full! :( Not hard packed full, felt pretty grainy, I could massage it easily, but not watery either.

She’s been happily with the rest of the flock, acting normal.

What should I do? I would guess it’s not an impaction, so either soup crop or pendulous crop? How would I know the difference between the two?

I have noticed her crop is still bigger than the other birds, I’m sure it got stretched out quite a bit as it was huge when we first noticed it full of fluid about three weeks ago.

I did find an interesting note in my records- about a year ago I noticed big bird was seeming tired when out free in the yard, then some fluid came out of her beak and she seemed fine after that. I thought at the time she must have drank too much water. But in hindsight this might be an indication she’s had crop problems for a while.

Maybe it’s time for a crop bra? Should I also treat for sour crop again?

Thanks once again for your help, you were right that crop issues are often recurring :(

Oh no, darn it. It could very well be having a tough time draining. After her episode it could be stretched out and need to come back down to size, sometimes that happens. My chickens crop was larger for a bit after having crop issues, but did shrink back down. It might sound silly, but if you kind of gently massage and then hold it up a few times a day does it make a difference and start to drain for her?

The good thing is that now you have an idea of how to treat a variety of crop issues and know what to look out for. You can have some supplies on hand ready to go. Some birds are just more prone to crop issues for some reason. A lot of times reproductive issues come with them, too. You may need to do a little research or trial and error to find a diet that works with Big Bird and her crop, sometimes that can help if the problem starts recurring more often.
