Hello, chicken world! Its been so long since I've had a sick chook, I was hoping to keep my streak up!

I have an approximately 1.5-year-old Belgian D'uccle weighing around300-400g. She has been having some crop issues for a while now and I have run out of ideas to fix them. First, I thought she had impacted crop, so I was giving her crop massages, syringing water and holding back food. For a while, she seemed cured, but a week later when checking on her in the morning, her crop emptying had stopped again. So, I started the process over but still no change. This morning when I was giving the flock some wet cat food I noticed she was struggling to swallow. She was stretching her neck out funny and not moving, even when a hen higher in the pecking order came over. It only lasted around 10 seconds before she continued eating. This happened about 2-3 times. I had a good look down her throat to check for worms, cankers or a blockage, but it all seemed normal. These two things probably aren't related to each other but I've said them just in case they were. No other birds are exhibiting these symptoms. I've checked her over and there don't seem to be any injuries or broken bones.

Shes been eating her normal seed, wet cat food, kitchen scraps, canned corn and live mealworms. Her poos have been normal thus far.

I would like to try and treat her myself as we only have regular vets here, no specilist bird vets. They will see her but I feel like we dont get the best care.

Usually, she'll sleeep on the top roost with a bedding of wood shavings sutible for poultry, but recently we ran out of that and she has had hay. I fear she may have a string of that stuck in her crop.

If anyone has any ideas what could be wrong please let me know! If you've experienced this before, tell me how you treated your bird and the outcome! Thank you.

Does she have chicken grit available to help her digest grasses and other foods. Do you not feed her a balanced chicken feed? She should be on chicken feed as 90% or more of her daily food. Scratch grains, scraps, corn, and cat food are not enough protein or have a balance of vitamins and minerals and other nutrients for a chicken. They will eat those things in preference to chicken feed, but it is not as good for them. She could have an impacted crop from eating straw or if she is not getting grit. I have not had good outcomes with chickens that have developed crop problems, since mine were related to reproductive disorders usually. Here are 2 good articles that may help you:

I have now realised my wording is bad. Grain and layer mash makes up the majority of her diet, the other things listed are only treats, She does not get them daily. The feed given does have grit mixed into it and we do feed their eggshells back to them. Would that be enough or should I provide more?

Yes, I also have not had good outcomes with crop issues so I really want to get good methods so I don't have to lose any more hens. It's too traumatic!!:hit

Thank you for those links, I will give them a read and see if they help. :thumbsup
