Crop questions please help.. **HEN PASSED - GROSS CROP FINDINDS PIC**

I'm so sorry for your loss

Walmart, and usually other grocery type stores carry BOS, back in the pet supply area, by the wildbird seed usually.

This whole corn thing, that causes a deficiency is making me nervous, as I fill one of my feeders with layer crumbles, and the other with cracked corn, along with scratch on the ground, that has corn in it. I wonder now if I'm giving too much corn...

I must be going crazy but everytime I go into the bathroom I swear I still smell that awful stink from her crop - I cleaned the tub with bleach and hot water but I swear I can still smell it - DH says its just " in my head " -
all the others look great this morning - all the crops are a normal size barely bloated since they have only been out for a few hours and have not had time to fill up.

I am glad the picture did not gross everyone out to much - I hope it can help someone else who might be facing the same thing.

My girls have stopped getting cracked corn for a weeks now , but they get plenty of other treats like apples,grapes,oatmeal,tomatoes,bread, so I dont think they miss there corn much LOL

I'm glad that was just a picture. I swear I could smell it here sitting by the computer. I even gagged.

My ameraucana hen is still hangin in with her "pigeon breast", so I guess I am lucky.

Julie, sorry that you lost her. Poor girl. I don't think I would have the guts to open her up, that was brave of you. At least you know what was in there.

I am so sorry about your hen.
Sorry I did not see this thread earlier. I did go through this with my EE hen last fall, and she is fine now. If anyone else is having same problems and wants to talk to me, feel free to PM or email.
(I think the first thing is to decide if its impacted or sour, the treatments are different.)

Sometimes vinegar will cut the smell out of the bathtub....sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt.

Sorry you lost your hen but at least we are all learning on this one! Not unusual to find feathers in crops but not as bad as yours.

I'm sorry you lost your bird. I've been watching this thread because I have a bird I call "Pammy" short for Pamela Lee Anderson because by the end of the day her crop is almost dragging the ground and sways as she runs around farm. My girls all free range. She does not seem ill in any way, climbs/flys back up to coop ceiling to roost and nest boxes to lay and is very active. But when she runs she looks just like PLA on BayWatch.

None of the other girls have crops that hang between their legs and sway back and forth like a bad boob job. But by morning she's flat chested again and a day of feeding starts all over.

I saw someone post about pigeon breasted or low hanging crops and even crop bras so I'm keeping an eye on Pammy in hopes she doesn't end up like your poor girl.

I'm sorry Ruth, but I'm getting giggly picturing the beginning of Baywatch-music and all, with the gals/guys doing that slow motion run across the beach...then I picture a chicken-same way, lol!

I just came in from feeding them their evening meal and they all came running - 12 with breasts high and dry and nice and firm and Pammy - swaying from side to side. Guess she had a good day free ranging.

In all seriousness if anyone thinks there may be something seriously wrong with her let me know. She's not one I can catch or pet so I would have to wait till she's roosted to examine the crop.

Maybe a box of baking soda dissolved in warm water and let it soak the tub for a couple hours? Plastic can retain odors, you may not be crazy. I don't think the molecules that cause smell are inactivated by bleach, just the microorganisms.
