Hello, my friend borrowed my incubator and hatched a chick with cross beak and a missing eye. She can’t keep the chicks, just wanted to hatch them. So I’ll be caring for these chicks soon. What can I expect? This chick hatched on its own and has eaten/drank. Seems to be doing ok so far (24 hours old).

Have you looked closely to see if the eye is stuck closed from secretions? Cross beak chicks may have trouble getting enough food and water, and their deformities can get worse as they grow. You can try feeding chick crumbles out of a high sided feeder. You may want to break some into smaller pieces or grind them. Wet feed mixed with water may be easier to take. As the chick grows the beak may need trimming slightly and filing to help it close better. Here is some reading for you:

Thank you! I have checked out those articles.

No eye at all! I’ve never seen this before, neither has the girl who has the chickens the eggs came from. This is the first egg to ever hatch that was fathered by this rooster though, not sure if that means anything. I do have 9 other birds from the same farm though who have been very healthy, no issues at all.

He seems to be eating and drinking relatively ok so far…
