Cross breeding

IMO, you'll not have a hard time selling any pullets from that mix. My barn yard mix pullets sell well. I am breeding for small combs and colorful egg baskets. But, you will need an exit plan for your cockerels, and if you are not able to cull any deformed or failure to thrive chicks, you might not want to hatch eggs. Also, more unsolicited advice: read all of "hatching eggs 101" in the learning center before plugging in your incubator.

I have a large Brahma/EE Rooster that breeds my Orpington and Speckled Sussex Hens...When I have Chicks to sell they go quickly..Even the Cockerels are easy to get rid off...Lots of people love barnyard mixed...I sure do!

Currently I have an 8 week old Silver Pencilled Plymouth Rock cockerel and 7, 2year old commercial pullets. I would like to breed them when the cockerel becomes the right age, to hopefully produce some good egg layers. Any advice or opinions please.

I love the idea of crossbred chicks. Since production hens have a shorter laying life than heritage breeds, this is a good plan for the near future.
Silver penciled rocks are beautiful and your chicks should be good layers. Maybe not as many eggs as production birds but predictably for a longer time. The chicks should be stronger than either parent since you will be breeding in hybrid vigor. Keep the pullets and sell or give away any cockerels you don't need. You may consider keeping one or two in case anything happens to your rooster. Most people don't care if their hens are purebred as long as they lay eggs. My cross bred chicks sell just as easily as the purebreds.
Don't get discouraged by negativity. These are chickens, not puppies. You will be delighted with your new babies. They will be beautiful. Enjoy the diversity.
