crossing a game rooster with a dominic hen

Traits such as comb type, color and pattern very easy to repair after introduction of game genes regardless of color variant. Type and production qualities are a different matter. No matter how done effort requires many generations with the easier issues done easily on front end of that effort.

True. I always figured they had a similar ancestor somewhere. If I remember correctly the Dom games came from an island off the coast of Louisiana, descended from Spanish games. Some of them come more of a crele and others will throw some almost pyle colored ones. Good luck with your project.

I selected for stronger / faster / harder feathering which easily resulted in desired changes. Could have selected back towards Dominique appearance as well. Key is selection employed.

Over the last five weeks have hatched 34. 50% are single combed. I could easily cull the seventeen single combed birds, but i feel since the rose comb is so recessive might as well grow them out and select for type since I only plan to hatch 50. Three weeks ago I did switch the cockerel with his brother who carries a nicer comb and spike. Doubt I will see much change in percentage. Since this is the first pen that I have used a single comb Hen,makes me doubt my line of Dominiques for combs. But that was always put on the back burner for selection over the years. What a mess.

Relax on the comb. The mess part, well it comes with the territory. Be prepared to do some inbreeding with multiple pairs. The line breeding and flock breeding may not be best until you are close having a final product that is increasing homozygous for the alleles you desire.

Yea you got it with the combs. Refering more towards my line of Standard Dominiques being an issue with the combs. Combs and overall heads were put on the backburner while I selected for type and now it will be very difficult to correct. Will grow out all these crosses to see what dominate traits are prevalent good and bad and then cull down to the rose combs. Have plenty of room for growing. Do not plan on hatching any thing else until next fall, winter. Will post some pictures and notes later on to give you an idea what direction I want to select for. Your input will be appreciated.
