I am very new to this game, I have acquired a beautiful Maline Rooster and am wanting to do meat type but definitely in it for the eggs too, so I bought Barred Rock Hens for eggs and am hoping to cross the Barred Hens to my Maline male and am wondering if anyone has any experience with this mix, are they a good table bird?
I was then hoping next season to breed on of the Barred/Maline Male chicks to some Maline Hens that I will be getting in 2016. Thoughts?

Talk about cross breeding!!! Lol I say of both breeds lay good and both breeds are 4-5lbs at 4-5 months... Go for it. The hens can lay for you and the Roos can go to the slaughter and you can process all the roosters at once or week by week... Starting at month 3.5 and until the have enough meat that you are happy with the end dish. From a crock pot to a oven or deep frier it takes some getting used to for everyone I'm sure but once you get it done a few times you'll feel like you can actually provide for you family by raising more than just eggs for breakfast and desserts. Maybe having less and less seasoning as you process them will tell you when is a good time to have hem processed by.

When I have 12 Roos at 13 weeks and it's a breed I'm not sure of I will process and eat two per week until week 16 then I keep two till week 18. Keep track of weights and ages in weeks from hatched and you'll learn in one hatch when the beat time to process is for the rest of he birds
