Our pullet that turned out to be a roo started crowing a few days ago - at 6:30am. This was his pattern for a few days and today he seems to be crowing like once an hour, four or five times in a row. What's "typical" crowing behavior? He's a Buff Orpington. Thanks!

I'm not sure you'll find that there is a "typical". Mine is 16wks old and is a siver-laced wynndote and he crows every time someone pulls in the drive, or if he sees us come outside he crows as if to say "I'm still here!! Come and see me or better yet let me out!"

I let them out to free range alot and they really like it!!!

I think they crow for a variety of reasons and some may be specific to that roosters relationship with his owners. We'll see what other have to say!

My roo's crow all the time. Usually they start about one hour before daybreak and then crow most of the day. I can't even imagine how many times they crow in one day, but if I got a dollar every time they crowed, I'd be wealthy.....LOL

Ours is definitely not there yet, though I am getting such a kick out of this while we can... I think I'd enjoy the crowing all day but we'll be getting busted for sure before long and need to get our little guy a new home.

My year old rooster crows whenever he wants...lol

sometimes at 1 am, 3:30 am, this morning it was 5:30 am.... when I let him out at 9ish, he jumps out and announces to the world
" I am on guard watch out"

There was one nite 1 of the older hens ( separate run) went inside and he didn't see her do it, so the crowing started and didn't stop until I put him inside and he could see her again.

I am not sure why some cities have rooster by-laws....they are no louder then a barking dog.
and because of these laws , so many rooster chicks are culled.............It just doesn't make sense to me. Luckily I live in a small country town that doesn't discriminate against poultry.

I had a jap. bantam last year that I finally got rid of because he was mean. But man did he like to crow! I mean every few minutes and all day & all night long. You could go outside at 1:30 in the morning and he would be crowing and not stop. Plus he was loud for a wee one. But my new one only does it a few times a day. Thank heaven for that.

My 8 week olds crow, or they think they crow, all the time. There is no rhyme or reason to it that I can tell. I love it though...they sound like a broken horn at this point. Too funny.
