Well, maybe chickens aren't for you then.

I keep chickens for food, eggs and meat, I hatch new layers every year and eat the extra cockerels and old hens.

If you insist on a pet cockerel, keep him inside your house.

That is uncalled for. There is a difference between stating your opinion to give advice and unnecessarily being mean.

Our 6 month old Rhode Island Red Rooster has just began crowing in the morning, has anyone tried the No Crow Rooster Collar and is it worth buying ?
I'm in England so would have to get it shipped over but that's no problem and I'm willing to pay depending on all of you guys advice and feedback ??

If he is just crowing in the morning, either bring him into an insulated garage or your house to sleep and let him outside once it is "day" time, or insulate the whole coop(maybe even keep it dark) and do not let them out until it is a normal time for people to be awake. You might have to get really creative, but if you really care about him, go for it. Never let anyone tell you that an animal is not worth it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting your birds to live.

I have 3 of these collars. No one has choked to death. Use the same reasoning as when fitting a dog collar. If you can't get the tip of your pinky finger under it, it may be too tight. The collar doesn't eliminate the crowing. In my case it just dampened the noise. I wound up rehoming them since the risk of losing everyone was just too great

I personally love the sound of crowing myself as well... But, it can get a little annoying when there are 3 of them out there, with one named Pete...because he comPETES with every crow he hears, and rePEATS himself incessantly, ALL day.

They don't just crow in the morning; they crow in the evening to gather the ladies to roost, they crow to warn passersby, they crow if I go mess with the hens... The crow all the time!

If he's your only rooster, chances are less that he will feel the need to crow all day, but since you mention neighbors with roosters, he's going to hear them and compete accordingly, just so you're warned lol


Not all neighbors love the sound though, so definitely a good idea dea to keep him locked up in the morning until at least th school bus picks up kids and people are up and off to work

On a side note, I don't really believe anyone means to sound rude or harsh, its just that we see a lot of owners asking questions that we may have experience with (or not lol) and we try to help as much as we can, but when it comes down to trying to save a single bird that someone has become attached to, its even harder to convince a "pet" owner that sometimes trying to save one bird can cost the whole flock. And I can come across pretty abrupt sometimes too lol, no ill will is meant, its just practical honesty
