I just go and and feed the "horde"-- a mixed group of loose turkeys, chickens, and my two guineas. I noticed that one of my turkey hens, Trouble, is missing. Guess who should come running from the woods to eat when called? Coming from the woods is not a good sign. This means Trouble has been laying eggs and has decided to make a nest. She wants to make babies. It's December, which means it will be the end of January when they hatch. It's still way too cold for babies here, which means they probably won't make it without intervention. This now means I have to make accomodations for a broody turkey, which I haven't really considered a urgent project.
I guess she just didn't get the memo that this is a spring project that should have been put on hold.
Apparently, the wild instinct has been bred out of her to the point she just doesn't get it. *sigh*
On a positive note, my incubator will be empty by Thursday, so after that's cleaned up and reset, I can put the eggs in it and maybe she'll not lay anymore until I can get the turkey pen built. This way I'll also have a tamer group to work with. As it stands now, I can only handle one grown tom without conflict.
Off to move the small dog kennel and make her a shelter of some kind...
