So i normally buy pellet feed because last time i boughy crumble over the summer i felt like they ate way more of it even with treats an free ranging all day. But it was also the cheap brand walmart sells but same size if that makes a difference. But i sent by boyfriend to get me feed an came out with the right brand (blue seal home fresh) an size bag (50pds) but crumble.. I was like "great this will be gone just as fast " and he over paid since we were at trator supply but between formenting some an giving it normal mixed with oats it actually lasted me almost a month in the winter between 12 chickens. What do you use pellets or crumble an can you tell a difference in food intake?

Yeah thats true. But i thought the pellets would be more filling since its bigger pieces than crushed up feed. But i guess not lol an i think that the first time i bought it since it was a cheap brand that there was a lot of corn in it i usually have to get a bag every two weeks an thats only feeding twice a day plus treats. I am going to grow them a garden this summer an try growing sprouts or fodder. I just got to get my set up once spring hits so im off on the right foot.

My husband (used to) and my father-in-law works at a Feed Mill here in Pennsylvania. My husband buys my birds bags of layer mash mostly from the mill- which is powder. Not even crumbles.
This is what layers in production houses are fed day in and out apparently.
When my father in law cleans out his feed truck at the end of a day, he'll give me the scrapings of chicken, pig, sheep, cow, or even horse feed, which the chickens quite love all of it. Sometimes there are pellets in there.

The layer mash creates a lot of waste under their feeders. I don't much like the stuff at all so I've convinced husband to get some cracked corn also.
Pellets are my favorite choice for my birds but it's also more expensive because the mill has to pelletize/process the grain.

I don't know where you live, but the feed mill here in my town sells 50lb bags of layer mash/corn for $7 per bag. That's half the price of TSC feed per 50lb bag!!!!

If you can find a feed mill, they will likely have an office with bags for individual sale. You can walk away with twice as many 50lb bags for the same price you pay at TSC.

Yeah where i live in maine the only stores near me are Tractor supply which im not a fan. The prices arr double than paris farmers union an the hardware store near my house only sell southner traditional (i think thats the name) but it has way to much corn for my liking an is the same price as the blue seal i get $13.99. At Paris.
