I'm wondering what the positives and negatives are of each and what others use. They eat better and poop better on dry mash and seem to prefer it (the crumbles just get kicked out of the feeder and are left uneaten). Is there a reason why that would be bad to continue feeding them dry mash when they get to laying age?

I don't know about the mash but I do like crumbles better I mix oyster shell and grit in with it and I find that it gets on the floor but not a whole bunch.... I did use pellets and they worked well but i couldn't find one that had what I wanted in it so i went with a crumble :)

The shape of the feed is irrelevant nutritionally, basically. It's all about what your birds prefer and which best suites your feeders and management style. All of it begins as a kind of mash until the feed companies "shape" it.

If you're asking if it is OK to feed mash, absolutely. Many of us do.

I used to use crumble but since I started using pellets I love them!

(and thats good when your trying making profits of your chickens like me) . Because cruble is tiny little specs of food they dont get all the stuff at the bottom of the feeder but pellets they eat all of it. Mash ...dont even get me started I think its almost a waste thats all ill say about that!

This is in a nutshell the answer I was looking for I suppose, thank you. My birds seem to make less of a mess of it so for now I'll stick with mash. On a side note, do chickens suffer beak overgrowth as parrots do?
