So I was cleaning this egg that I got today, and all of a sudden it just crushed in my hand. I put it in a dish to cook for my chickens, but I want to know why it broke and how I can fix the problem.

Give them some oyster shell. They should sell it at your local feed store. That should toughen those eggs up a bit.

At least it crushed in your hand and not in your pocket. I've had that happen a time or two or three....
I agree. Your girls need oyster shell free choice.

OH, pocket omelletes are the best. My last had the parts of 5 eggs. I just dumped the contents of my pocket in a bowl and picked out the shell pieces. Out of 5 eggs I can usually save enough to equal 3 eggs.

I too have a hen who lays very thin shelled eggs. Often they will break when I go to mark the date on them. Chix have oyster shell available to them, and other 2 hens have very strong shelled eggs.

Thelma, the thin shelled layer, has always looked kind of "frazzled", unkept looking and like she needs to be groomed, and she is also kind of scatter brained. When I bought the chix from someone here in the country I got 2 BO's, a black sex link and then there was Thelma. She is just plain ditzy but eggs have gotten thinner shelled lately. I love her bless her heart. Do you have any suggestions other than the oyster shell? Thanks, Leslie
